How to read a cause list

Pick the right division
The Appellate Division hears appeals from the High Court Division. If you are unsure which applies to your matter, it is almost always the High Court Division at first instance.

Find the bench
Each list is organised by bench, with the presiding judges named. Your matter appears under the bench assigned to hear it, which can change between hearing dates.

Read the order of business
Within a bench, cases are numbered in the order they will be called. A case listed twentieth may not be reached before the Court rises.

Check the item type
Lists distinguish between fresh matters, motions, appeals and part-heard cases. The category affects how long the matter is likely to take and whether it will be reached at all.

Look again on the day
Lists are revised. A supplementary list may be issued, and a matter can be added, moved or taken out after first publication.

What is a cause list?
A cause list is the daily schedule of cases a court will hear. It sets out, bench by bench, which matters are listed, in what order, and before which judges. The Supreme Court of Bangladesh publishes a separate list for the Appellate Division and the High Court Division.
When is the Supreme Court cause list published?
The Court publishes each day’s list on its own website, usually the evening before the hearing day. Timing is set by the Court, not by any law firm, and lists are occasionally revised after publication.
How do I find my case in the cause list?
Open the list for the relevant division, then find the bench hearing your matter. Within each bench the cases are numbered in the order they will be called. Search the page for your case number or the name of a party.
Does Tuhin & Partners publish the cause list?
No. The cause list is published by the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. The links on this page go directly to the Court’s own site so that what you read is always the current official version.
Can Tuhin & Partners check the cause list for my case?
No. We do not carry out cause list searches on behalf of people who are not clients, and we cannot confirm whether a particular matter is listed. The lists are published in full at the links on this page and are searchable by case number or party name. For anything about a specific case, your advocate on record or the Court registry is the right source.
What do I do if my case is listed tomorrow?
Speak to your advocate on record. They will already have the listing and will know what is required for the hearing. If you have no representation at all in a listed matter, that is urgent and you should instruct a lawyer immediately — not necessarily this firm.
